Against the background of escalating geopolitical and geoeconomic rifts, discussions about implications for the international role of the USD (and USD assets) have gained momentum. How real is the scenario that the USD’s role as the dominant international currency might indeed be weakened? What are implications for the EUR and other major currencies? How are these developments interwoven with shifts in investors’ perception of safe haven and reserve assets? The e-lecture will start with an overview of key findings from the ECB’s Report on the international role of the euro. After this, a panel of top international experts will comment and discuss to what extent the current US administration’s disruptive approach to geopolitics and international economic relations might affect the USD’s international role, and what the repercussions on Europe and the euro might be.
