The European Money and Finance Forum (SUERF) and the European Central Bank (ECB) are jointly organizing a workshop entitled “China and the shifting global trade order”, which will be held virtually in the afternoon of 16 September 2025. This half-day workshop aims to bring together experts on China from policy institutions and academia to share insights and analysis on the outlook for the Chinese economy in light of current domestic and global developments.
Geoeconomic tensions have intensified in early 2025, marked by new US tariffs reaching levels not seen in over a century. These developments are poised to have a lasting impact on the global trade order and China’s position within it. At the same time, China’s evolving economic policies, its growing technological and industrial capabilities, and its increasing influence in global trade and investment are reshaping economic dynamics, particularly in its relationship with Europe. The ongoing shift in the global economic landscape, coupled with rising geopolitical tensions, is creating new challenges for international economic relations. This workshop will examine the economic and geopolitical dimensions of China’s growing influence and its engagement with Europe, inviting papers that explore how both regions are navigating and shaping the future of the global economy.
