In his book “Completing a Genuine Economic and Monetary Union”, published by Cambridge University Press in January 2023, LSE Professor Iain Begg examines efforts to strengthen Economic and Monetary Union in the European Union, especially over the last decade, asking if enough has been done to render it more sustainable and resilient. Drawing on a survey of 111 leading experts on the economics and politics of EMU, Iain Begg’s book reviews the wide-ranging reforms undertaken since the crises of the early 2010s and assesses whether they go far enough. Although it concludes that much has been done to push the euro towards being a more complete currency, it identifies remaining flaws and challenges which EU leaders need to resolve.

After an overview of Professor Begg’s findings, four top experts closely familiar with the workings of the EU, its economic governance, and ongoing endeavors to develop it further will add their perspectives. Jean-Pierre Vidal, Chief Economic Advisor to European Council President Charles Michel at Council of the European Union, Isabel Vansteenkiste, Director, ECB, and member of SUERF’s Council of Management, Martin Larch, Head of Secretariat of the European Fiscal Board, and Nicola Giammarioli, Secretary General and Management Board Member, ESM. The event will be moderated by Ernest Gnan, Secretary General of SUERF.
